| If you want to... | Look at |
|---|---|
| Strum and sing along | A traditional western body, such as the F and FG series |
| Play fingerstyle or lead | A concert cutaway, such as the FS series |
| Perform or record | An electro-acoustic with a pickup (models like FX280 and FSX80C, or APX and CPX) |

The body shape affects volume, tone and how comfortable the guitar is to hold.
| Body shape | Sound and feel | Suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional Western | Full and powerful, with strong bass response and excellent projection | Strumming and versatile playing styles |
| Concert Cutaway | Comfortable concert-sized body, balanced tone, easy upper-fret access | Fingerstyle and lead playing |
| Medium Jumbo | Rich, resonant sound with extra volume and tonal depth | Players who want a bigger sound |
| Original Jumbo | Bold projection, deep bass and strong acoustic presence | Dynamic performances and strong strumming |
| CSF | Compact and travel-friendly, warm and focused tones | Casual playing and portability |
| FG Small Shape | Smaller body profile for comfort, balanced sound | Beginners and younger players |
A good first guitar should be comfortable, stay in tune and sound good enough to keep you playing. These are our usual recommendations, and our guide to the best guitars for beginners in India goes deeper.
| Guitar | Choose it if |
|---|---|
| Yamaha F280 | You want a full-size, affordable first guitar with a classic dreadnought sound |
| Yamaha FS80C | You prefer a smaller body and easy access to the upper frets |
| Yamaha FX280 | You want a traditional Western body with a built-in pickup so you can plug in as you grow |
| Yamaha FG800 | You want a solid top and richer tone to grow into |
| Yamaha FG820 | You want a serious step up, with a free case on selected finishes |
Once you are ready for more, Yamaha’s range grows in three directions.
Different tops, necks, fingerboards and pickups give guitars their character. New to the terms? Our guide to the different types of guitars is a good place to start.
The top (soundboard) shapes the guitar’s voice more than any other part.
| Top | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Spruce | A strong, lightweight wood known for a bright, clear sound. Common on acoustic and electro-acoustic guitars. |
| Solid spruce | A more premium option made from wood that has been selected and dried for a long period for optimal sound. |
| Solid Sitka spruce | A popular top for its clear, balanced sound, strong projection and power. Durable and stiff, with high sound pressure level. |
| Solid Engelmann spruce with A.R.E. | Acoustic Resonance Enhancement is a treatment that mimics the natural ageing of wood, giving a brighter, more nuanced and richer sound. |
In general, a solid top costs more and tends to improve with age. A laminate top costs less and copes better with humidity and temperature changes.
| Neck material | Character |
|---|---|
| Locally sourced tonewood | Selected for durability, resonance and balanced tone. Used on Made in India models. |
| Tonewood | Chosen for tonal quality, stability and playing comfort. |
| Mahogany | Warm, rich and resonant with enhanced mids, and a smooth, durable feel. |
| African Mahogany 3-ply | A three-piece construction for improved strength and resistance to warping. |
| Nato | Similar to mahogany with a slightly brighter tone. Smooth, comfortable and cost-effective. |
| Back & Sides | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Rosewood | Smooth, durable and warm, with balanced resonance. Widely preferred by beginners and professionals. |
| Walnut | Slightly brighter in tone, with good sustain and a smooth playing surface. |
A standard acoustic needs no electronics, while an electro-acoustic lets you plug into an amp, mixer or PA. Yamaha uses two systems:
| Technology | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| A.R.T. (Acoustic Resonance Transducer) | Captures the natural resonance of the guitar body for a warm, dynamic amplified tone, ideal for stage and studio use. |
| S.R.T. (Studio Response Technology) | Recreates the sound of a professionally miked acoustic guitar, delivering natural depth and clarity. |
Our electro-acoustic buying guide lists models and features. All Yamaha acoustic guitars use steel strings.
Yamaha’s Made in India guitars are crafted at the Yamaha Music India factory in Chennai. The pure acoustic range includes the F280, FS80C and F310. The F280, F310 and FS80C are exclusive to India, priced affordably, and comfortable for beginners, with the durability and stability Yamaha is known for.
For electro-acoustic versatility, choose the FX280 or the FSX80C, both built with an A.R.T. pickup to recreate natural tone and dynamics, and suited to home and stage use. The Yamaha C40 is one of Yamaha’s most affordable full-size classical guitars, with the CG shape and a spruce top.
Locally sourced materials help keep these guitars accessible. Shop Made in India acoustic guitars or read why Made in India guitars are a smart start.
A tuner keeps you in pitch, fresh strings improve tone and playability, and an amplifier helps electro-acoustic guitars reach a bigger room. Browse clip-on tuner and guitar amplifiers to complete your guitar setup. If you prefer nylon strings, see our classical and nylon guitars.
India’s monsoon humidity, summer heat and air conditioning can affect wooden instruments. Keep your guitar in its case, away from direct sun and damp walls, and read our guide on protecting your guitar from humidity.

The best first guitar is the one that is comfortable to hold and easy to keep playing. The Yamaha F280 and FS80C are popular starting points because they are affordable and forgiving. If you want a guitar to grow into, the FG800 adds a solid spruce top that improves the tone.
The difference is mainly body shape. F-series guitars have a traditional dreadnought body with a fuller, stronger sound that suits strumming and singing. FS-series guitars are slightly smaller with a cutaway, so they feel more compact and reach the higher frets more easily. Neither is better, so choose by comfort.
Letters usually describe the family and features. F is the traditional dreadnought line, FS is the smaller body style, and FG is the classic Yamaha dreadnought with solid-top models. An X in the name, as in FX280 or FSX80C, means a built-in pickup.
Yes, if you want to play songs around the house, sing along or take your guitar anywhere. It needs no amplifier or cables. The trade-off is that steel strings are harder on beginner fingertips than nylon or electric strings, so expect sore fingers for the first few weeks.
Choose by the sound you want and how gentle you need the strings to be. Acoustic guitars use steel strings and give the bright, ringing tone of pop, rock and folk. Classical guitars use softer nylon strings with a mellow tone, which suits classical, flamenco and gentle fingerstyle.
Pick the largest guitar you can hold comfortably. Full-size dreadnoughts suit most adults. Smaller players and younger learners may prefer a concert cutaway, a CSF, or an FG Small Shape, all of which have a more compact body. Sit down with the guitar if you can and check that you can reach around the body and fret the first few notes without straining.
A solid top is made from a single piece of wood that vibrates freely, so its tone usually opens up and improves as the guitar is played over the years. A laminate top is made from layered wood. It costs less and copes better with changes in humidity and temperature, so it is a sensible choice for a first guitar. Solid tops need more care in the Indian climate.
All are spruce tops with slightly different characters. Standard spruce gives a bright, clear sound. Solid Sitka spruce is known for clear, balanced tone with strong projection and power. Solid Engelmann spruce with A.R.E. (Acoustic Resonance Enhancement) has been treated to mimic the natural ageing of wood, giving a brighter, richer and more nuanced sound.
Nato is a tree from South and Southeast Asia with an appearance and properties similar to mahogany. Yamaha uses it for guitar necks and for the sides and backs of some acoustic guitars. It is durable, comfortable to play and cost-effective, with a balanced tone that is slightly brighter than mahogany.
They use steel strings, which suit pop, rock and folk. Never put steel strings on a classical guitar, because classical guitars are built only for nylon strings and steel can damage the neck and bridge.
An electro-acoustic guitar has a built-in pickup and preamp, so you can plug it into an amplifier, mixer or PA system. Unplugged, it plays and sounds like a regular acoustic. Choose one if you plan to perform, record or play with a band.
A TransAcoustic guitar adds reverb and chorus using vibration inside the guitar body, so you hear the effects without an external amplifier or pedals. It suits quiet practice, travel and songwriting.
The F280, FS80C and F310 are acoustic models. The FX280 and FSX80C are electro-acoustic. The Yamaha C40 is a classical guitar. You can see them with the Made in India filter on this page.

A tuner, spare strings and a gig bag or case cover the basics. If you buy an electro-acoustic, add a cable and an amplifier.
Change them when they sound dull, feel rough or no longer hold their tuning. If you play most days, that is typically every few weeks to a couple of months. In humid weather, strings can corrode faster, so wipe them after playing.
