This is the most common question asked by beginners in India. Both are excellent — but they serve different players. The F280 is a full-size dreadnought: larger body, louder projection, deeper bass response. If you plan to strum chords and play rhythm guitar, the F280 is your choice.
The FS80C has a smaller folk body with a cutaway. It's quieter but brighter and more articulate. If you want to fingerpick, play melodies, or are a smaller-framed player — the FS80C wins every time.
A cutaway is the curved indentation in the body near the neck. It lets your fretting hand reach higher frets — typically fret 12 to 20 — with ease. For pure beginners, this barely matters since most beginner-level songs use the lower frets. However, if you plan to stay with guitar seriously, a cutaway is a future-proofing investment.
Choose non-cutaway (F280) if you prioritize volume and resonance. Choose cutaway (FS80C) if you anticipate playing lead melodies and solos within a year.
Both the F280 and FS80C use a spruce top — the gold standard for acoustic guitar tops. Spruce produces a bright, clear, and projecting tone that improves with age and playing time. The back and sides use Nato wood, a mahogany substitute that adds warmth to the midrange.
The rosewood fingerboard feels smooth under the fingertips and provides excellent intonation across all frets. Yamaha's factory setup ensures string action is optimized for beginners — you'll notice significantly less finger pain compared to cheaper no-brand guitars.
Natural — The most versatile and timeless option. Suited for any playing style and any room.
Tobacco Brown Sunburst (TBS) — Vintage-inspired gradient. Excellent choice for folk, country, and Bollywood players.
Black — Bold and modern. Great for players who also gravitate toward rock or metal music.
Wood Brown — Earthy and natural. Ideal for players who appreciate a close-to-wood aesthetic without the raw natural finish.
All finishes are gloss-coated and equally durable. Your choice should reflect your personal identity and playing environment — there is no tonal difference between finishes.
