Choosing an electric guitar is exciting, and it can also be confusing. There are different shapes, pickups, finishes and price points, and the names don't always explain themselves. This guide breaks down the electric guitars at Yamaha Music Store by level and budget, so you can pick the one that fits the way you play.
Five questions will narrow it down quickly:
Yamaha's electric guitars come in two families, Pacifica and Revstar. Both are guitar series names, and each suits a different personality.
| Features | Pacifica | Revstar |
|---|---|---|
| Story | Developed with Yamaha's Los Angeles custom shop for top session players, and available since 1990 | Inspired by café racer motorcycles, launched in 2015 and refreshed in 2022 |
| Character | Versatile, easy to play, classic look | Distinctive style, chambered bodies, bold finishes |
| Tiers | Entry-level (Pacifica 012), Standard Plus and Professional | Element, Standard and Professional |
The Pacifica 012 is the entry-level electric guitar, in red metallic, black, white and dark blue metallic. It is a comfortable, versatile first guitar that covers pop, rock and blues without a big investment.
The Revstar Element strips the design down to the essentials. It has a chambered mahogany body, a mahogany neck and two Alnico V humbucking pickups. A push/pull Dry Switch filter brightens the tone for extra versatility. It comes in five finishes (Swift Blue, Red Copper, Neon Yellow, Black and Vintage White). A left-handed version, the RSE20L, is available in Black and Swift Blue.
The Revstar Standard is built for players who want more tones from the same guitar. It has a chambered maple and mahogany body, a carbon-reinforced neck, two Alnico V humbuckers, 5-way pickup switching and a Focus Switch that adds a boosted, more aggressive character. A deluxe gig bag is included, and there are several café racer finishes to choose from.
Pacifica Standard Plus is the step up from the entry-level Pacifica. It comes in finishes such as Sparkle Blue, Ash Pink, Black, Shell White, Peppermint Green and Desert Burst, with a gig bag included on select models.
Revstar Professional guitars are made in Japan, with carbon reinforcement in the body and neck, a chambered maple and mahogany body, 5-way switching and the Focus Switch. A case is included. The RSP20 uses humbuckers, and the RSP02T uses P90-style single-coil pickups. Pacifica Professional sits at the top of the Pacifica family, supplied with a hardshell case.
| Pickup | Sound | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Humbucker | Thick, powerful, low noise | Rock, blues, heavier styles |
| Single-coil | Bright, clear, chiming | Pop, funk, clean playing |
| P90-style | Warm with a bit of bite, between the two | Blues, indie, vintage tones |
